Best Kid-Friendly Restaurants in La Jolla: A Local Mom's Honest Guide
By Daniela Larsen | Sereia Photography | La Jolla, CA
After a morning at the cove or an afternoon chasing waves at La Jolla Shores, hungry kids are a guarantee. The good news? La Jolla has some genuinely wonderful spots for families — not just restaurants that tolerate kids, but places where everyone at the table leaves happy.
I've eaten my way through this neighborhood as both a local and a mom, and these are the spots I actually take people to. Real favorites. Real dishes. No fluff.
1. El Pescador Fish Market
634 Pearl St, La Jolla | Fresh seafood, casual
I have to start here because this place is close to my heart — and my stomach. El Pescador is a La Jolla institution, and the moment you walk in you understand why locals have been coming here for decades. It's a working fish market that also happens to serve some of the freshest seafood in San Diego — unpretentious, no-fuss, and completely wonderful.
Favorite dish: The Halibut Sandwich. Fresh, light, perfectly prepared — it's simple and it's everything. I genuinely think about this sandwich when I'm not eating it.
Why it works for families: The atmosphere is relaxed and unfussy. Kids do well here because the menu is approachable, the food comes out at a good pace, and there's something about eating near the water that makes everyone a little more easygoing.
Tip: Go for lunch. The halibut sandwich hits differently in the middle of the day after a morning beach walk.
2. Puesto La Jolla
1026 Wall St, La Jolla | Modern Mexican street food
Puesto is one of those rare restaurants where the adults are just as excited as the kids. The space is colorful and lively, it's walkable from the cove, and the taco menu is genuinely creative — we're not talking basic here.
Favorite dish: All the tacos. Honestly. I go back again and again and work my way through the menu because I can't pick a favorite. The portions are generous enough that ordering a few to share is the move.
The secret weapon: Go on Taco Tuesday for half-off tacos. This is not a drill. Half-off on some of the best tacos in La Jolla is an extraordinary deal, and it makes Puesto one of the most family-friendly (read: budget-friendly) nights out in the neighborhood. The kids' menu is solid too, with rice and beans and Agua Fresca drinks that they love.
Tip: Taco Tuesday gets busy — make a reservation or arrive by 5:30pm to snag a table without a long wait.
3. The Taco Stand
1006 Prospect St, La Jolla | Authentic Mexican, fast-casual
Here's where I have to tell you something that might surprise you: don't go to The Taco Stand for the tacos.
Go for the Burritos… the California Burrito.
I know, I know — it's called The Taco Stand. But this California Burrito is my all-time favorite. Flame-grilled certified Angus beef, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, and their signature fries tucked right inside. It is a whole meal. It is a whole experience. It is the reason I have very strong opinions about burritos everywhere I go now.
For the kids: The menu is simple and satisfying — quesadillas, burritos, and churros for dessert. It's fast, it's good, and it's easy on everyone.
Tip: There's always a line at lunch and dinner. It moves quickly and it is absolutely worth it. The California Burrito makes the wait a non-issue.
4. The Cottage La Jolla
7702 Fay Ave, La Jolla | American brunch, cozy
A La Jolla institution for breakfast and brunch. The Cottage is unhurried, charming, and the kind of place that makes a slow Saturday morning feel like a treat. They bring the kids activity sheets and crayons while you wait — which buys parents exactly the peaceful meal everyone needs mid-vacation.
Favorite dish: The pancakes and French toast are legendary here, and the brunch menu is full of Southern California classics done really well. The covered patio is beautiful on a sunny morning.
Tip: Weekend mornings have a wait, but it moves. Arrive a little before 9am to beat the rush.
5. Duke's La Jolla
1216 Prospect St, La Jolla | Hawaiian-inspired, casual upscale
Duke's sits right at La Jolla Cove with some of the most stunning ocean views in the neighborhood. The Keiki (kids) menu comes with coloring and bingo games, dishes are served on cute fish-shaped plates, and the whole vibe is warm and welcoming.
Favorite dish: The poke for lunch is fresh and wonderful. And you cannot leave without the Hula Pie — it's the dessert La Jolla is low-key known for and it absolutely delivers.
Tip: Make a reservation, especially on weekends. The Cove view tables go fast, and you want the view.
6. Piatti
2182 Avenida de la Playa, La Jolla Shores | Italian trattoria
Just a few blocks from La Jolla Shores beach, Piatti is the perfect dinner spot after a long day in the sun. Handmade pastas, artisan pizzas, a shaded patio, and prices that are actually reasonable for La Jolla — it's a rare combination.
Favorite dish: The handmade ravioli. It's exceptional. Kids love watching the open kitchen while they eat their pizza.
Tip: This is my go-to after a late afternoon shoot at La Jolla Shores. Relaxed, satisfying, and nobody leaves hungry.
7. Barbarella
2171 Avenida de la Playa, La Jolla Shores | Italian-inspired, fun and festive
Barbarella is a La Jolla classic, and once you walk in you'll understand why locals are so loyal to it. The food is wonderful — I always go for the pasta, and it never disappoints — but honestly, the experience is half the reason to come.
The restaurant goes all-out for Halloween and the holidays with decorations that turn the whole space into something you have to see to believe. It's the kind of place where kids walk in with wide eyes and parents are taking photos before they even sit down. If you happen to be visiting La Jolla in the fall or around the holidays, make Barbarella a priority — it's genuinely one of the most festive and memorable restaurant experiences in San Diego.
But don't wait for a holiday to visit. The atmosphere is fun and casual year-round, the staff is warm, and the food is consistently good. It's the kind of neighborhood restaurant that earns its iconic status.
Favorite dish: The wood-fired pizza. The crust has that perfect char you only get from a real wood-fired oven, and it's the kind of dish that photographs beautifully against all that incredible decor.
Tip: Around Halloween the decorations are at peak spectacle — if your trip overlaps, this is a must. Make a reservation; it fills up fast during the holiday season.
Tips for Eating Out in La Jolla with Kids
Parking: La Jolla Village parking is notoriously tricky on weekends. The Prospect Street garage and the lot off Herschel Avenue are your best bets. For La Jolla Shores, arrive early — the street parking fills up fast.
Timing: Hit restaurants slightly before peak hours — 11:30am for lunch, 5:30pm for dinner — and you'll get better service and happier kids who aren't waiting forever.
The microclimate is real: Even when the rest of San Diego is warm, the Cove area can be cool and foggy in the morning. Pack a light layer for the kids. It usually burns off by noon.
Taco Tuesday is your best friend: If you're visiting mid-week, plan your schedule around Puesto's half-off Taco Tuesday. Dinner for the whole family for a fraction of the usual La Jolla price tag.
