Frequently Asked Questions
Planning a portrait session can bring up lots of questions, and I want to make the process as simple and stress-free as possible. Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions I receive about my San Diego and La Jolla portrait photography sessions—from what’s included in each package, to the best time of day for beach portraits, to how many images you’ll receive in your gallery. My goal is to ensure you feel fully prepared, excited, and confident that your session will be a fun and memorable experience for you and your family.

Most sessions take place in La Jolla, Pacific Beach, and other scenic areas around San Diego. Favorite locations include La Jolla Shores near Scripps Pier, Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach, Windansea Beach, and select parks and coastal overlooks. I’m happy to recommend locations based on your group, lighting, and overall vision. Sessions within La Jolla (92037) and up to 15 miles away include no travel fee.
-
Session length depends on your selected collection and typically ranges from 30 minutes to 1 hour. Mini Sessions are 15 minutes and designed to be short and efficient. For full sessions, I don’t watch the clock—sessions flow at a comfortable pace and continue until everyone feels relaxed and I’m confident we’ve captured all the images we need. Some sessions may wrap up a bit early, while others may run slightly longer, depending on how things unfold.

The most flattering light happens during golden hour, shortly before sunset, when tones are soft and skin looks its best. I also offer early morning sessions around 8 a.m., which provide beautiful light, cooler temperatures, and fewer crowds—often ideal for families with young children.

Midday sunlight creates harsh shadows, strong highlights, and squinting—especially at the beach. Softer morning or evening light produces more even skin tones, gentle contrast, and the timeless look you see throughout my portfolio.

You can expect to view 50–200 images in your online gallery, depending on your session. The number of images you download is based on your selected collection, with the option to purchase additional images or the full gallery.

Yes. I regularly photograph visiting families, multi-generation groups, and family reunions. Sessions can accommodate groups of up to 15 people, and I’m experienced in pacing sessions comfortably for children and grandparents alike. For groups larger than 15, please contact me to discuss options.

I recommend booking 2–4 weeks in advance, with summer months often requiring earlier planning due to higher demand. Availability is limited, and popular dates tend to fill quickly, so booking ahead is always encouraged when possible.

Weather can vary significantly in La Jolla, including coastal conditions such as the marine layer, which may bring overcast skies. Sessions can take place in most weather conditions, and overcast light often photographs beautifully. If heavy rain or unsafe conditions are expected, we’ll reschedule at no additional cost. I monitor forecasts closely and communicate proactively. I’ve also photographed sessions in the rain in the past when conditions allowed and clients were comfortable proceeding.
